Evie Tobias Interview

-Introduce yourself; give a little background about yourself and what you do?

Hi, my name is Evie Tobias and I currently reside in Los Angeles, California. If I had to choose one way to describe myself it would be an all around entertainer with a strong passion for singing and songwriting. I graduated from Howard University in 2005 attaining a degree in Musical Theatre. I have been working in the entertainment industry for many years and have had the great pleasure of working with many great artists. Some of my most memorable moments were performing with Ciara, Al Green, Corey Glover, Yolanda Adams and singing at both Barrack Obama’s Inauguration and behind Bruce Springsteen at the 2008 Superbowl. I am blessed to have accomplished so much and look forward to what my future holds.

-What do feels separates you from others in your field?

Many people believe they are unique. I truly am. I am an individual with an edginess that is both diverse and unpredictable (but in a good way because one never knows what to expect.) I like to incorporate many styles in my music creating a blend of Classical, Musical Theatre, R&B, Rock and Hip Hop.

-Where do you see the current state of hip hop at in 5 years?

Hip Hop is a culture, a way of life. When the world changes and progresses so does the state of Hip Hop. Sometimes these effects are positive and other times not. Today’s society will not be the same in five years. But if I had to guess I would say that technology will play a huge role in the Hip Hop industry. Many Hip Hop artists will gain exposure via the internet and also will be more likely to begin producing themselves. Hip Hop will also become even more diverse and cross over blending the style with many different genres of music.

-What role does family and friends play in your career?

I owe where I am today and my success and development in the music industry all to my family and friends. They have advised me, supported me and guided me through many different struggles over the years. They inspire me with my songwriting and push me to dig deep for the passion that I have in music. With their support I have become a stronger woman and an entertainer. -What do you thinks separates winners from losers?

Winners never give up. They always strive for the best and never quit till they reach the finish line. Losers never make it to the end, they may never see the finish line or they may cross it but sometimes its just too late. The music industry is one of the most challenging industries to break into. It takes a strong motivated individual to withstand all the many hurdles along the path of success. I am still standing strong in this industry, pushing forward with the finish line in sight at all times. That to me is the true definition of a winner.

-What advice can you give others in your field that you learned thru trial and error?

Over the years I have learned so much in the music industry. I have tried some things and succeeded and other times I was not as lucky. But one thing I have always done is never quit. I would have to advise others breaking into this industry to learn as much about their craft as possible. You can never know too much. Stay ahead of the times. Things are always changing and progressing. So, with these many changes in the world one needs to be able to change also.

-Do you have any political views since everyone in today’s society does?

Of course I do. I think people may not always want their views heard but everybody has an opinion. As an entertainer I take advantage of allowing my voice to be heard. It's important though to stay positive always remembering that people are sensitive when it comes time to politics. I like to learn and listen to different peoples views and keep an open mind at all times. -How do you feel about the rumors about Obama that’s rampant on the Intertnet?

I think that there will always be a lot of controversy when it comes time to Obama or any President for that matter. Its hard for one person to make a whole country approve of him at all times. Although, I think Obama is being held to a higher standard because he is the first black President. I believe many people wanted him to fail. But he came in to the Presidency at an unfortunate time, a time of war and financial turmoil. So, as with anything in life people need someone to blame.

-Do you have any religious views? Are you religious?

Both God and Jesus Christ play a huge role in my everyday life. I have a strong faith and believe in prayer everyday. I thank God for all the many successes and great things that have happened to me throughout my life and in my music career and for all the things to come in the future. -What are some of your influences in your life?

By far, my mother is one of my biggest influences. She has supported me and motivated me to always push forward with my dreams. I would not be where I am today without her love and support. My biggest musical influences would have to be Michael Jackson, Bette Midler and Whitney Houston. These musical talents make me push forward and light a fire within me whenever I hear their music.

-Switching to a serious subject, what is you view on drugs? Users, Abusers, Pushers?

Drugs have played a major role in the demise of many great entertainers. I think drugs are an outlet for many people. When times are tough they search for a temporary way to make themselves feel better. Other artists, turn to drugs because they feel it inspires them to write great music. I can only speak for myself and say that drugs are not my outlet. I pray though that anyone who is an abuser or pusher realize that drugs are not the answer and get the necessary help they need.

-What can the public look for from you in the future?

I am in the process of many great things. I have been working with amazing producers in the industry and recording some hits. As far as my art pieces go I have a huge mixed media art series in the works. I also have a business venture that I think will bring me great success. So, I have a lot going on and I am dabbling in many things but know that soon it will all be worth it. I look forward to what my future holds and sharing it with the world.
